Standing Out in a Crowd: Tips on how to write a good cover letter

Posted by saraht on February 13, 2007

After reading the various articles on writing a cover letter, I was able to pick up a few good tips.  Writing a cover letter that corresponds to a particular job is crucial.  You should emphasize the skills that the company is looking for and give examples of how you can help the company.  Also, the cover letter should express your personality and unique qualities you possess.  In the Craig’s list post, the general idea was to write a “different” type of cover letter that was not formal.  However, I think that the formality of a cover letter depends on the type of the company and the type of position a person is applying for.  Writing a good cover letter that won’t immediately be thrown away takes time and consideration.

Taking Charge of Your Career

Posted by saraht on February 8, 2007

John Byrne, with Marshall Goldsmith, provide the keys to succeeding and managing one’s career in the podcast “Who Manages Your Career”.   A person cannot succeed in corporate America on pure luck or rely on someone else to manage their career.  Developing a strategy, declaring a personal mission, and creating a brand image for one’s self allows a person to effectivly and efficiently manage their own career and work their way up the corporate ladder.  Byrnes and Goldsmith break down these three keys to success so that everyone knows exactly what they are talking about and how to achieve them.  Examples, provided by Goldsmith, also allows the listner to see how mastering these three pointers have affected others’ careers in a positive way.  I learned a lot from listening to this podcast and have gained useful knowledge that I will apply to my own career that will begin shortly.  I know that I must take charge of my career because if I don’t, no one else will.
